Editing photos is not new, but not needing a darkroom and free access to pro tips is. So what are you waiting for? Start shooting RAW today. Capture NX is a relatively simple program, that is one of it's strongest points. Capture NX is also versatile, it's the only program I use to edit photos.

Tip 1) I used to use the color control points alot, now that i learned how well the +/- paintbrush works i use it 95% of the time when im only editing a select area. Just click "new step" change contrast, noise reduction or anything, then choose the right amount for the target area while ignoring the rest of the photo. Then click the "+" sign on the paintbrush. everything will revert to the unedited state, then "paint" on the effect where it is needed. as long as the effect you are applying is not radically different from the rest of the photo it will blend in effortlessly.

Tip 2) Toggle between the "show selection" and normal view when editing selected areas. This way you can make sure you've "painted" on the effect everywhere it is needed, and if you are using the color control points it helps you understand where is effected so you can use them more efficiently.

Tip 3) Try shooting with low contrast, saturation, sharpness, ect and adding it where it is needed with Capture NX. It forces you to think more deeply about what editing should be done and where and to what degree.

Tip 4) If you change the colors, I recommend using the eye dropper and taking a color from within that photo or another photo. Just choosing a color from the color wheel often leaves the picture more noticeably "photoshopped".

Tip 5) Q: How do I change the in camera contrast settings in Capture NX?

A: Base Adjustments - Camera Adjustments - Tone Compensation.  Change the setting from unchanged (which means unchanged from how you shot it) to low contrast, than OK. It will become low contrast, which will help you if some parts are too light or dark. Then apply contrast back to the areas that you want it in, with "new step" - Light - Contrast/Brightness and the plus brush.

Tip 6) How Much Editing Is Enough?
