Choosing your aperture is fundamental for creative photography. Choosing the aperture allows you to show the background in focus or totally out of focus, or somewhere in between.
The Basics: A small F number, 4.5 for example, makes a large aperture. A large aperture means the lens is "wide open" and the background will be out of focus.
conversly a large F number, 32 for example, makes a small Apeture. A small aperture means the lens is "stopped down" and the background will be in focus.
Tips to remember this by, The number you choose will make the oppsite Aperture. Big number = Small Aperture and Small number = Big Aperture.
A small Aperture means the distance will be clear, imaging squinting to see something far away, this may help you to remember to "stop down" when you want the distance in focus.
The Details: The lens you are using and the focal length (how much you are zoomed), as well as the composistion, play a big part in just how "in focus" or "out of focus" the background will be.
Now large range zoom lenses are very popular. For example, an 18-200. when using this lens at 18mm the diffrence between a large aperture and small aperture will not be dramitic. However at the 200 end of the zoom the diffrence will be quite dramitic.
Photos comming soon, this will make it easier to understand.
