Is RAW Right For Me?

If you are debating this question in your head, the answer is YES.

If you are not so good/ serious now, but would like to be in the future, the answer is YES.

If you want your photographs to be more than "snap shots", the answer is YES.

If you even have a slight hunch that you'd like photography to be your hobby or job sometime in the future, the answer is YES.

The reason i'd rather error on the side of shooting RAW is that RAW files can be changed to JPG's relatively easily, but a JEPG will not give you the same flexibility and quality as a RAW file and can not be converted into a RAW file with all the benefits of one. Or an even easier option is to take a RAW and a JPG at the same time. This is a common feature on DSLR's now.

If you are worried about space, on your Memory Card and/or Hard Drive, there is still an option for you. Shoot JPG and when you see one on your LCD preview that you think is better than average, take it again on RAW mode. However not all photos and be taken again and laziness may keep you from doing this as much as you should. So if possible, i suggest keeping your camera on RAW or RAW+JPG modes.

Case in point, now im fully committed to becoming a pro photographer but 2 years ago when i got my first DSLR, i was only at the point of making photography a serious hobby. The RAW photos i took during that time i can now re-edit and its almost as good as if i shot them yesterday.

What Kind of RAW to Take?

i'm very happy with Nikon's NEF format. The thumbnails are easily viewable right in windows exploerer, it's impossible to mess up your original data, it's supported by a large number of software and gadgits,

More to come...
